New Zealand Fishing Calendar
October
Is the opening of the fishing season in most districts and means the resident trout have been undisturbed for months. Temperatures are still cool, but with longer days the browns and rainbows become very active, and there is excellent fishing with weighted nymphs along soft seams in most mountain streams. Some good evening hatches, often resulting in very good dry fly fishing at dusk.
November - December
This is undoubtedly the best time to fly fish in mountain streams throughout New Zealand. The days are lengthening and while the weather is warm, the water is still cool. There can be good mayfly hatches, encouraging the trout to feed recklessly on the surface during the day. This is the least crowded time to fly fish in New Zealand
January - February
Traditionally this is the most popular time for anglers to visit New Zealand. Streams are low and wading is easy. Trout are highly visible in the water, but selective with their feeding. On smaller streams these conditions demand careful stalking and delicate presentations with small drys and nymphs.
March - April
The weather is still warm and settled. April has the lowest average rainfall of any month in New Zealand. Generally a brilliant day is heralded by a good frost. Resident trout in mountain streams willingly rise to the surface. The dry, cooler evenings often induce good hatches.
May - June
Autumn offers a variety of outdoor activities in New Zealand. The focus for fly fishing at this time is in the back country rivers and the tributary streams flowing into Lake Taupo come into their own.

River Birches Lodge
Located on the banks of the Togariro River, The River Birches is in the heart of New Zealand’s finest fly fishing region. Whether you’re new to fly fishing or an experienced angler, the Tongariro River is a superb environment to catch trout.
Everything you need from waders, licenses, rods and transport, through to arranging an expert guide will be pre arranged for you. An expert guide will ensure you're located in the best possible fishing spot.
For those more experienced anglers looking for a bigger adventure, helicopters will take you to more remote spots where some of the largest brown trout can be found. These rivers are renowned for dry fly fishing especially in summer, so be prepared for some challenging and exciting action!
Various fly fishing techniques can be applied to the surrounding rivers depending on conditions. Wet fly fishing with a sinking line is popular especially on pools on the Tongariro, like the Hydro and Major Jones, while nymphing remains the most widely used technique as pools are often swift, relatively shallow and rocky. Dry fly fishing is an option during the summer when hatches of beetles and cicadas are abundant.
The Lodge offers 3 guest rooms and the newest addition is a 3 bedroom self contained guest cottage. If you are travelling as a group there is also the option to book the lodge for your exclusive use. There is an onsite fitness room, and the lodge is able to equip you with any gear that you may need. Locally sourced produce ensures nothing but the most delicious food at every meal.

Recommended Fishing Lodges - South Island
Owen River Lodge
Owen River Lodge is located in the Owen Valley near Murchison, in the Nelson Lakes district of the South Island. The lodge sits on the bank of the Owen River among 16 acres of gardens and farmland. With almost a kilometre of river frontage, it is an ideal locale for a quick practise before you venture out with your fishing guide or for that quiet after-dinner cast during the evening rise.
The fishing in our region involves walking and wading up stream and fishing for sighted brown trout. This means that for the majority of the rivers, you must see the fish before the fish sees you. You should use a dull-coloured fly line, long leaders and fine tippet. Unlike lake fishing, the majority of the casting you will do will be medium to short distances—accuracy being much more important than the ability to cast the complete fly line. Generally, anglers use a 5 or 6 weight rod, 9 to 10 feet in length.
The boutique lodge is small and intimate, with a maximum of 12 guests at any one time. Accommodation is in six beautifully appointed garden cottages, each with a view of the Owen River valley and nearby granite escarpments of the Kahurangi National Park.
