Waka (Canoe) Interactive Tour
This interactive Waka (canoe) experience provides a rare and unique insight into our ancient customs, rituals and traditions.
This 3-hour cultural experience will teach you about local Maori customs and history of this northern tribe (Ngaphui). One of the highlights of the tour are learning the skill involved in paddling the waka (canoe) in the calm waters of the estuary before making your way to the local water falls.
Disembark to visit a Ngapuhi meeting house and perhaps meet people from this Maori community. You'll also learn the moves of a 'haka' — our famed ancient Maori war dance.

In 1926 the visionary Māori politician, Sir Apirana Ngata established the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. This centre of learning ensured the traditional methods of weaving, bone carving, tatooing (Ta Moko) and carving were not lost. Today you can pay a visit to the centre and watch the young craftsmen and women in training, under the guidance of master craftsmen.
This is a wonderful way to experience the living history that is being lovingly crafted by the students and the great pride that comes with it.
