Pen-y-bryn Lodge is a Victorian mansion located in the historic coastal town of Oamaru. Built in 1889 for John Bulleid, a successful local businessman, and his family, it is purportedly the largest single-storey wooden dwelling in Australasia. “Pen-y-bryn” is Welsh for “top of the hill” and is a suitable name for the lodge, as it is located at the summit of South Hill, on the southern fringe of town.

The lodge provides guests with a glorious  relaxing retreat in New Zealand’s most well preserved Victorian town.       With only five elegantly appointed en-suite guestrooms, offering all modern conveniences, Pen-y-bryn accommodates just ten guests at a time. Guests are invited to make full use of the lodge’s facilities, whether to simply relax, enjoy a game of snooker on the magnificent billiard room’s historic slate table, curl up with a good book in the library or enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Your hosts at Pen-y-bryn  love entertaining and  cooking is a particular love.   Be assured of some wonderful meals made with locally produced and lodge grown ingredients that come together to make for a memorable evening.  Dinner is served in the sumptuous dinning room and will always be accompanied by some of New Zealand's best wine offerings.     As you are located near the landing sight of the famous little blue penguins,  you have the option of  interrupting your dinner to allow time for the penguin viewing, which takes place at dusk.
