Tongariro National Park Crossing
This iconic walk draws visitors from all over the world. Spectacular hiking through alpine forest, volcanic mountains and crater lakes is breathtaking and can be done within a day by most active people. You will need to spend 2 nights in the area to do the full crossing of the park.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing spans the length of Mt Tongariro (19.4Ks) and takes about 7-8 hours to complete. The walk starts at Mangatepopo (1100m), and terminates at Ketetahi (750m). The highest point on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is Red Crater (1886m).
The Tongariro National Park has Dual World Heritage status and the Northern Circuit is part of the Department of Conservation Great Walks network. The three active andesitic volcanoes, Mt Tongariro (1967m), Mt Ngauruhoe (2291m) and Mt Ruapehu (2797m), are majestic and dominate the National Park.
