BAY OF ISLANDS :

The picturesque Bay Of Islands, is a  comfortable 4 hrs drive north of Auckland.   This magical location  has an enviable climate which makes it a popular destination for big-game fishing and water sports from kayaking to sailing.

Although early Polynesian voyagers arrived in New Zealand as early as the 11th century,  it wasn't until the arrival of Captain James Cook (1796)  that traders and missionaries arrived.   The legacy of these early settlers can still be seen in the form of  historical  buildings such as the Old Stone Store and the Mission House in Kerikeri.

ROTORUA  via WAITOMO CAVES:

NAPIER - via LAKE TAUPO :

Today's  road journey,  approx. 2 hrs   takes you through  to Taupo township and across to the Art  Deco city of Napier.    A must do stop en route through Taupo is at the thundering  Huka Falls A great place to stop and experience the power of this natural wonder.   

The aftermath of a national disaster (February 3rd 1931)  has resulted in Napier becoming the  most well preserved Art Deco city in the world.  Napier's city centre has the feeling of a time capsule - the seamless line of    1930s architecture is quite extraordinary.

TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK :

A scenic drive from Napier today takes  you back   through Taupo township  and on to the southern end of Lake Taupo  and on to the Tongariro National Park.    

Tongariro National Park has gained international significance by being awarded UNESCO Dual World Heritage, a status which recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding  volcanic features.

BLENHEIM:

A quick 30 min flight from Wellington to Blenheim will ensure you make the most of your first day in the region.  If you prefer the longer scenic route, then the Cook Straight Ferry runs daily services to Picton, and you where you can go on to Blenheim  (25 mins) , or alternatively spend 2 nights in the Marlborough Sounds, which is accessed from Picton.

In the past Blenheim offered a safe harbour to explorers such as Captain Cook.    Nowadays travellers from New Zealand and the rest of the world visit Blenheim to enjoy its wine industry, gourmet foods, Marlborough  Sounds and activities  such as golf, fishing, kayaking and water sports.

PUNAKAIKI:

Today's  journey takes you inland before re-emerging back on the West Coast where you'll spend the  afternoon / night at Punakaiki (population 70!).   The main attraction at Punakaiki is are the amazing pancake rocks.

Nature began this work of art about 30 million years ago. Over thousands of years, alternating layers of small marine creatures and sand became buried and compressed on the ocean floor. This created areas with multiple layers of hard limestone and softer sandstone.

TEKAPO:

Lake Tekapo is about three hours drive south-west of Christchurch in the Mackenzie Basin. You'll pass through some wonderful small rural townships on the way giving you a great feel for this special part of the country.

The  township faces north across the remarkable turquoise coloured lake and to the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps.  Lake Tekapo gets its intense milky-turquoise colour from the fine rock-flour (ground by glaciers) which is suspended in the water.

 OAMARU :

The drive north from Dunedin to Oamaru  takes approx. 1.5 hrs, but with several 'must see' stops along the way,  we encourage you to take a the leisurely option and take in some of the districts historic places of interest.

The coastline between Oamaru and Palmerston offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, uncrowded beaches and a host of friendly townships each with their own unique character. 




About Oamaru

  • The world famous ​Moeraki boulders are just south of Oamaru and well worth a visit.  The fantastic rock formations sit on the foreshore and at low tide are a fantastic sight to behold. 
  • European settlement began in Oamaru in 1853. The Harbour, during the late 19th Century, was vital for Oamaru and its farming hinterland. Grain and wool were housed in often-ornate warehouses built and carved from locally quarried Oamaru limestone.  
  • Today the wonderful limestone buildings make up the Victorian precinct now home to a collection of curio shops, restaurants and gift stores. 
  • Oamaru Harbour is home to the Little Blue Penguins.  They head out to sea to feed by day and return home to their hutches as the sun sets.  They are impossible not to love so be sure to make this evening tour a priority during your stay​.
