Wai-O-Tapu  Thermal Park
Picture
Explore spectacular nature at New Zealand's most colourful natural volcanic park. Walks through this unique geothermal area take between 30 and 75 minutes and provide a wide range of amazing photo opportunities at features including the world famous Champagne Pool, naturally coloured hot and cold springs, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations.

Wai-O-Tapu means "Sacred Water" and it is easy to see why. Hot pools range in hues of turquoise blue and rich green to burnt orange and sulphuric yellow, making the steaming waters of Waiotapu a dazzling must-see.  Experience unique sinter terrace formations clad in primal native bush, spectacular views over mysterious craters, erupting mud pools, as well as world famous attractions, Champagne Pool and Lady Know Geyser.

Champagne Pool
The spectacular Champagne Pool is a magnificent example of the vibrant colours caused by mineral and silicate interference. Bubbling CO2 rises from the deep green of the spring, while heavy metal sulphides precipitate at the edges to form a brilliant orange ring. Follow the pool down to where it spills over a waterfall of ethereal beauty and trickles over the surface of Primrose Terrace towards Bridal Veil Falls.

Lady Knox Geyser
If the awesome spurting of boiling hot water inspires you, head to see Lady Knox, a geyser of both scientific and historical interest. Bursting from its white, conical mound of silica at 10:15am daily, Lady Knox has a special trick to her timely eruptions! Discovered by a gang of prisoners washing their clothes in the early 1900s, the geyser erupted, shooting hot water 20 meters into the air after the men had unwittingly poured soap into the spout. Now all it takes to get old Lady Knox firing is a bit of soap every day at roughly 10am.
