Welcome to the Grand Lodge. As you enter the Edwardian lodge, set high on the hill, an awe-inspiring view of the sparkling sea greets you from every vantage point.
Enjoy the grandeur and lifestyle of a bygone era, perfectly complete with carefully-chosen antique furniture and oversized classic fireplaces. As you explore the lodge, you'll discover each room with a distinct atmosphere. From airy open lounges to smaller intimate settings, you can socialise freely or find a cosy space to relax in peace with your favourite novel.
An elegant formal dining room flows through to the impressive country kitchen and conservatory. Warm light streams in from the gardens to illuminate an open kitchen, and a home-style table offers guests the chance to discuss the chefs’ secrets of the kitchen.
Walk through the French doors and step into another world; Wharekauhau’s magical private courtyard and gardens.
The immaculate croquet lawn and Pentanque field border the inviting, sun-soaked courtyard, an ideal spot to enjoy a local Chardonnay or gather with new-found friends.
Suites
Wharekauhau’s Cottage Suites are a picture of luxury. Perched high above the thunderous surf of the Palliser Bay, you are treated to dramatic vistas.Relax in absolute bliss and forget the outside world. Be at one with nature amongst the sheep that dot the pastures and enjoy deep sofas, fluffy pillows, heated marbled floors, and homemade cookies are just a few of the luxuries that are associated with our 13 Cottage Suites.
In true Wharekauhau style, natural materials are used throughout the cottage suites, including clay tiles, pebble mosaics, plastered walls, rich New Zealand wool carpeting, cotton bed linen and hemp curtains.
Interconnecting Rooms
All guest cottages have the option to interconnect, so families and friends travelling together have the advantage of being able to interconnect with other rooms booked in their group.
* All Guest Cottages are located within 150 metres of the main lodge.

Owner's Cottage
The Owners Cottage is a world-class, 4,500 square foot, hideaway that offers that offers, you the guest, the best of both worlds. It offers complete privacy, and independence, as well as access to all of the Wharekauhau amenities.
The Owners Cottage is located a short stroll from the main lodge with stunning views over the dramatic Palliser Bay.
The 3.5 bedroom cottage is split between two levels, joined by an Oamaru sandstone staircase. The house has been designed to incorporate as much natural light as possible with high ceilings, large windows, and full sliding patio doors.
Lounge & Dining
The cottage has a central, open-plan lounge and dining area. Deep chairs, a hidden flat screen television with integrated house BOSE audio visual system, and an open log-burning fireplace. A large dining table for private family dinner sits between the kitchen and the lounge.
Guest Rooms
All three guest rooms have stunning views across Palliser Bay, and are filled with natural light; however the downstairs master guest room also opens out onto a private paved courtyard.
Each room is set with a king sized bed, comfortable chairs for lounging, air conditioning, and an open gas fireplace for added ambience. Each room has a private ensuite bathroom, complete with claw-foot baths and separate showers. The Master Guest bathroom also has a secluded outdoor shower.
The Kitchen
The house is set with a fully functional, well-equipped kitchen. Guests can opt to join other guests at the main lodge, or to dine at the house with a personal chef.
*Please note a personal chef comes with an additional charge, and a minimum 48 hour notice period is required.
The Study
The cottage comes complete with a study. Fitted with a workstation, Wi-Fi, and general office requirements. The study also has an additional sofa bed, which makes an ideal conversion into a 4th bedroom for private staff travelling with the party.
The Cellar
A subterranean staircase winds down to the underground wine cellar. The cellar makes the ideal place to have a quite glass of wine before bed, or have the lodge sommelier come over and host an intimate wine tasting.
*Wine and cigars from the cellar are charged back to guests on checkout.
Outdoor Living
The sweeping front patio extends out to a heated infinity pool – think summer poolside barbeques.There is an outdoor gas fireplace with seating and exterior music for those still summer nights. A gazebo sits overlooking the ocean, as well as a private courtyard for the Master bedroom.
Coming and Going
For added privacy guests can land a helicopter directly at the cottage, and departures and arrives can be conducted in a way the no other guests would know you are hidden away at Wharekauhau. The house also has its own remote accessed electronic security gate
